On 26 June 2026, the South African Competition Commission published draft terms of reference (ToR) for a proposed market inquiry into franchise markets. The inquiry is initiated under section 43B(1)(a) of the Competition Act 89 of 1998 (Act), on the basis that the Commission has reason to believe there are features that may impede, distort or restrict competition in the South African franchise business market.
