Durban: Former Fees Must Fall leader and MK Party activist Bonginkosi Khanyile has sparked outrage after criticising the Inkatha Freedom Party’s decision to elect businessman and taxi industry figure Mavava Sikhakhane as its Durban Central chairperson.

Speaking on the Durban Network Podcast, Khanyile described the Inkatha Freedom Party as a “dying party” and claimed choosing someone he described as inexperienced in politics would not help it win control of eThekwini in the local government elections in November.

His remarks triggered a backlash on social media.

MK Party member Breakdown Mathenjwa and African National Congress leader Sya Myeza both called on Khanyile to apologise, warning that comments targeting political figures could fuel political intolerance.

Sikhakhane is a prominent businessman with links to the influential Gcaba family and is regarded as a powerful figure in the taxi industry.

Klaarwater: police have launched a manhunt after a ward councilor was shot dead outside his office in Klaarwater near Mariannhill on Thursday afternoon.

According to police, the councillor was meeting community members when a man arrived pretending to need assistance.

The councillor reportedly walked outside to help him before the suspect pulled out a firearm and opened fire.

The councillor died at the scene while the gunman escaped on foot.

Police said the motive for the killing is still unknown and detectives from several specialised units are searching for the suspect.

Isipingo: Five men have each been sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2018 murder of Warrant Officer PN Linda in Malukazi near Isipingo.

The KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Durban found Zwelithini Mkhize, Mlungisi Ndlovu, Siyabonga Dlamini, Siyabonga Ngcongo and Sithembiso Cele guilty of murder.

The court heard that the off duty police officer was talking to his girlfriend outside his vehicle when the group confronted them.

The attackers accused the woman of being a police informer, robbed Linda of his service pistol and then shot him.

His girlfriend was also shot but survived the attack.
