  • Former Nongoma mayor Clifford Ndabandaba and councillor Kaizer Dladla both joined MK Party after resigning from the NFP last week.

Former President Jacob Zuma used an MK Party campaign rally in ward 17 in Nongoma, north KwaZulu-Natal, over the weekend to attack President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“As we speak, there’s this guy called Cyril Ramaphosa. He is a white boy who is stuck in a black skin. You can hear even when he speaks that he was groomed by white people,” Zuma told the crowd.

He urged voters to reject other parties ahead of Wednesday’s by-election. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of an NFP councillor from Nongoma Local Municipality.

“I am begging you not to vote for these parties who have no interest of black people,” Zuma said. “The only party that is fighting for your interest is the MKP.”

Zuma also welcomed former Nongoma mayor Clifford Ndabandaba and councillor Kaizer Dladla to the MK Party. Both resigned from the NFP last week over the leadership of NFP President Ivan Barnes.

Ndabandaba was previously arrested for fraud and corruption linked to a R200,000 tender. He was charged alongside then deputy mayor Sabelo Nkosi of the EFF and ANC Speaker Babongile Sithole.

The trio was arrested in November 2024, together with two senior officials and a businessman. The state alleged the tender was awarded fraudulently to supply services to Nongoma Local Municipality.

All major parties are targeting the ward. IFP President Velenkosini Hlabisa held his own campaign on Saturday.

The ANC deployed NEC member Dr Zweli Mkhize to the ward. NFP President Ivan Barnes went door to door, donating food parcels to residents.
