• Over 2,000 delegates meet at Gallagher Convention Centre to elect a full new leadership team after John Steenhuisen steps down as federal leader.
• Delegates debate 58 constitutional changes, including a controversial plan to add a deputy federal leader role that could shift power inside the party.

The Democratic Alliance is facing a major moment as more than 2,000 delegates arrive in Midrand to vote for new leaders.

The party’s biggest congress yet is taking place at the Gallagher Convention Centre. Delegates are casting their votes to choose a new top leadership team.

John Steenhuisen is stepping down as federal leader. This means the party will elect a completely new structure. Positions include a federal leader, a chairperson and three deputy chairpersons.

The result of this vote will shape the party’s future. It will guide how the Democratic Alliance prepares for the 2026 local government elections. It will also affect how the party is seen as an alternative at national level.

Delegates have already agreed on policy positions. These cover energy, housing and migration. The party wants a managed shift in energy and better access to affordable housing. These are key issues for many voters.

But much of the focus has been on internal disagreements.

Delegates discussed 58 proposed changes to the party’s constitution. One of the most debated ideas is the creation of a deputy federal leader role. Some say this will strengthen leadership in the Government of National Unity. Others believe it could change the balance of power in the party.

There are also questions about what the new leaders will do next. This includes whether they will reshuffle the party’s 12 ministers and deputy ministers in the Government of National Unity.

Outgoing federal chairperson Helen Zille has assured delegates that the voting process will be fair. She said there will be no rigging.
