When people start talking about gender, dating, feminism, and power, sooner or later the word “patriarchy” shows up. It’s usually framed as a system created by men, for men, with women treated as second-class citizens as an unfortunate byproduct.
Now, let me be clear before anyone jumps the gun: I don’t deny history. A lot of men absolutely did women wrong! I don’t deny that women deal with things most men don’t even have to think about! Safety concerns, hyper-vigilance, moving through the world differently. Whether it’s watching their surroundings in a parking deck, keeping keys between their knuckles, sharing their location on dates, or just being constantly alert in ways men usually aren’t — those realities are real.
Women have a valid case when it comes to how systems have treated them historically and even now.
That said, I want to talk about something that rarely gets discussed honestly: the intersection of patriarchy and race — specifically, what it means to be a Black male inside a system that claims to benefit “men.”
Because here’s the thing: it doesn’t benefit all men.
