While I do like to treat myself every winter season with an extra-hot peppermint mocha from a local coffee shop, I prefer to save myself some money and make my own espresso drinks at home most of the time. One of my latest go-tos when I want a warm beverage that tastes like the holidays is a homemade eggnog latte. Rich, sweetly spiced eggnog provides all the richness and sweetness in this super-easy latte that has only three ingredients.

You can start with homemade eggnog, but honestly, store-bought works just fine here. I put my little Nespresso machine to work to brew the espresso, and in less than five minutes I’m sipping on this comforting, winter-y beverage that costs a fraction of one I’d buy from the café. (Have a crowd coming over? Try my Big-Batch Slow Cooker Eggnog Lattes instead!)

  • It’s so creamy and dreamy. The richness and sweetness of eggnog is the foundation of this latte, and it’s balanced perfectly with the flavors in the espresso.
  • You don’t need fancy equipment. Don’t fret if you don’t have a big fancy espresso machine or milk frother. You can make this latte by shaking it up in a jar and even use instant espresso.
  1. Heat the milk and eggnog. Warm up milk and eggnog together in the microwave, on the stovetop, or in a steaming pitcher or milk frother (which will heat and froth at the same time).
  2. Froth it up. If not using a steaming pitcher or milk frother, froth the eggnog mixture with a handheld frothing wand, or shake vigorously in a jar.
  3. Make the latte. Pour 2 shots of hot brewed espresso into a mug, then pour the frothed eggnog mixture on top. Garnish with whipped cream, ground nutmeg, and a cinnamon stick if desired.

Instructions

  1. Pour 1/2 cup eggnog and 1/4 cup milk into a steaming pitcher or milk frother and heat and foam to 145º to 165ºF with the steaming wand.

  1. Heat 1/2 cup eggnog and 1/4 cup milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until just starting to bubble around the edges (145º to 165ºF). Turn off the heat. Use a handheld frothing wand to froth until foamy. (Alternatively, transfer to a jar, seal with a tight-fitting lid, and shake vigorously until roughly doubled in volume, 30 to 60 seconds).

  1. Heat 1/2 cup eggnog and 1/4 cup milk in a 12-ounce microwave-safe jar until hot to the touch (145º to 165ºF), about 1 1/2 minutes. Seal the jar with a tight-fitting lid. Holding the jar in a towel, shake vigorously until roughly doubled in volume, 30 to 60 seconds. (Alternatively, blend with a handheld frothing wand until foamy.)

  1. Pour 2 shots hot brewed espresso into a 10-ounce or larger mug. While holding back the foam with a spoon, pour the eggnog mixture into the mug. Spoon the remaining foam over the top. Top with whipped cream and garnish with freshly grated nutmeg and a cinnamon stick if desired.
