KZN news bites: DA wants action on R20 million in Okhahlamba

Okhahlamba: The Democratic Alliance in Okhahlamba Local Municipality in Drakensberg has written to KwaZulu Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, asking for urgent action on over R20-million in unauthorised and wasteful spending found in a Municipal Public Accounts Committee report. Councillor Meshack Mlangeni said there is reason to believe serious financial problems may have happened.

Estcourt: The Estcourt Regional Court has sentenced 36 year old Sabelo Khumalo to 95 years in prison for rape and house robbery cases in Ntabamhlophe and Wembezi between 2021 and 2023. Khumalo was found guilty of attacking five women aged between 15 and 36 in separate incidents. He entered their homes, raped them and stole their belongings. He was sentenced to 75 years for rape and 20 years for house break ins.

Pietermaritzburg: The KwaZulu Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg has sentenced 24 year old Ntando Khanyile to life in prison twice for two murders. In November 2024, Khanyile killed siblings Goodman Mchunu, 55, and Ngenisile Mchunu, 78, in Muden after he believed a relative had taken his family’s livestock. He shot Goodman after a meeting did not happen. Four days later, he shot Ngenisile when she came for the funeral. He ran away and police arrested him weeks later.
