MultiChoice Confirms Closure of Showmax After a Decade. MultiChoice Group has announced that it will shut down its streaming platform Showmax, ending a ten-year run for one of Africa’s most ambitious video-on-demand services.
Launched in 2015, Showmax was created to compete with global streaming giants while offering a mix of international content and locally produced African entertainment. The platform underwent a major reinvestment and relaunch in 2024, but despite these efforts, persistent annual losses, strong international competition, and infrastructure challenges across African broadband markets have made the service unsustainable.
The decision follows a strategic review by MultiChoice and its parent company Canal+, which emphasized that the move is part of a broader shift toward financial discipline and optimized investment. For now, Showmax will continue operating, and subscribers do not need to take immediate action. Canal+ confirmed that the closure is not expected to result in job losses, with employees set to be supported through transition options.
The announcement marks the end of a decade-long chapter for Showmax, which once positioned itself as a hub for African storytelling and global entertainment. The platform played a role in showcasing regional talent and expanding access to streaming services across the continent.
In a message to customers, MultiChoice reassured subscribers that there will be no immediate interruption to service. The company stated: “Following a comprehensive review, the Showmax Board has taken the decision to discontinue the Showmax service in the near future. Importantly, at the moment there will be no interruption to your current service. You can continue streaming as usual, and no action is required from you at this time.”
MultiChoice added that streaming remains central to its strategy, with continued investment planned in premium content, technology innovation, and partnerships. The closure of Showmax signals a shift in focus toward sustainable digital offerings while acknowledging the challenges of competing in an increasingly crowded global streaming market.
