South Africa leveled their five-match T20 series against New Zealand with a 19-run win in the fourth match at Wellington’s Sky Stadium on Sunday.
The Proteas posted a seemingly modest total of 164-5, with Connor Esterhuizen most impressing with his 57 off 36 balls, including three sixes and seven fours.
In response, New Zealand were bowled out for 145 in 18.5 overs, with spinners Keshav Maharaj and Prenelan Subrayen playing a decisive role in restricting the hosts.
Maharaj took 2-22, while Subrayen claimed 2-13 in his first T20 international.
Gerald Coetzee also stood out with 3-31 with the ball, as South Africa’s bowlers strangled New Zealand’s scoring rate and picked wickets at crucial moments.
Tim Robinson top-scored for New Zealand with 32, while Esterhuizen’s innings was marked by a spectacular diving catch from Katene Clarke, on his international debut, off Ben Sears’ bowling.
The series, now perfectly poised at 2-2, heads to Christchurch on Wednesday for the decider, with both teams looking to seal the win.
