For decades, eating disorders and obesity have been studied and treated as separate issues. Eating disorder specialists have predominantly focused on psychopathology, body image, dietary restriction, binge eating, and extreme weight-control behaviors. Conversely, obesity specialists have concentrated on metabolic health, energy balance, medical complications, nutrition, physical activity, and weight management. This separation has produced important advances, but it may now also be creating limitations.
