(The Post News) – The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms expected to impact several parts of the country on Tuesday, 14 April.
According to the alert, the warning covers KwaZulu-Natal and the escarpment areas of Mpumalanga, as well as central and eastern regions of the Free State. The extreme southern parts of the North West are also likely to experience the impact.
Forecasters have warned that the storms may bring heavy downpours, frequent lightning, hail, and damaging winds. These conditions could lead to localised flooding, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas, as well as potential damage to infrastructure and informal settlements.
The rainfall forecast map indicates a high likelihood of up to 80% of widespread thunderstorms over central interior regions, with scattered to isolated showers expected across other parts of the country. Areas such as Johannesburg and surrounding regions are likely to experience significant storm activity.
Provincial Weather Outlook, Severe Thunderstorms Expected
–Gauteng: Cloudy in the south-west, otherwise partly cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thunderstorms. The UVB sunburn index is high.
– Mpumalanga: Cloudy at first, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms.
– Limpopo: Cloudy in the central and eastern parts at first, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers, but scattered in the south-west. No rain is expected in the north.
Residents in affected areas are urged to remain cautious, avoid flooded roads, and secure loose outdoor items that could be carried by strong winds. Motorists are also advised to drive carefully, as wet and slippery conditions may increase the risk of accidents.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have encouraged the public to stay updated through official weather channels as conditions may change rapidly.
