What started as a frustrating business glitch over a lost phone number saw Chantel van den Berg reach out to a young man who’d been sold the number in question. This paved the way to a connection that impacted them both and has sent Kabelo into the halls of medical school!

Johannesburg, South Africa (12 February 2026) – When Chantel van den Berg discovered that her business pay-as-you-go cell number had suddenly stopped working, she never anticipated it would be the very thing that would connect her with a young man who would profoundly touch her heart and his.

In her effort to resolve the dilemma, her service provider informed her that the number had already been sold to someone else. She decided to call the line, and a young man named Kabelo Moche answered. Through their conversation, they successfully arranged a SIM swap so Chantel could regain her business number; in return, she reimbursed him for the new SIM card and the data he had already loaded.

With the issue resolved, they went their separate ways…until a personal crisis left Kabelo distressed.

Taking a chance, he reached out to Chantel to ask for help buying food for himself and his brother, promising to pay her back. Chantel stepped in to help, sparking a bond that continued as Kabelo kept her updated on his journey through matric.

He even sent her his matric results with an impressive seven distinctions earlier this year, bringing much pride and joy to his guardian angel, Chantel.

Even though Kabelo got accepted into Wits University and was approved for NSFAS funding, it wasn’t enough to cover everything he needed – such as food, a laptop, transport, general living expenses and a shortfall in his accommodation fees.

Moved by his plight, Chantel wrote to the Jacaranda FM Good Morning Angels on Kabelo’s behalf to assist with support so he could step into a bright future as a qualified medical doctor who could also give back one day.

After receiving and sharing Chantal and Kabelo’s story, the SABAT Bursary Fund pledged to assist Kabelo with R60,000 towards the outstanding costs not covered by NSFAS, enabling him to start his medical studies at Wits without financial stress.

And there’s more! The Good Morning Angels Fund will also assist Kabelo with a further R40,000 to cover living expenses and food during his first year of medical studies at Wits.

Thanks to a “wrong number” that led to the right person, Kabelo is no longer just a young man with a dream, but a future doctor poised to succeed and heal.
