Port Alfred name change battle heads to court over ‘defective procedure’

The Port Alfred Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association is heading to the Makhanda high court to have a ‘public participation process’ by the Eastern Cape Geographical Name Change Council declared unlawful — saying the association was provided with no information explaining the background and motivation for the proposed changes, and adding that the council failed to follow procedures prescribed in several laws, including its own handbook.
