When the man and bear conversation first came up, most women probably thought the point of the dialogue was to bring awareness to how dangerous men can be. How women feel unsafe around men.

I don’t think that’s what it did. I think most men are aware that men are a danger to the women around them. I think it caused an ego-blowing truth to rear its ugly head.

Performative trust.

Let me explain. Men know they are a danger to women. They also feel they are our protectors. As Homer Simpson once said about alcohol, they’re the cause and solution to the problem.

So I think that someone who believes this also believes it balances out. It’s okay to be a danger to women if you’re also just as kind in the opposite direction. We see this train of thought in Netflix’s recent Diddy documentary, where a juror admitted that Cassie was physically abused, but followed up by mentioning she went to fancy dinners.

So, it evens out?

It’s a dangerous math that allows people to justify anything they put you through, as long as they promise to do something “worth it.”

Sometimes, you can wait forever for that promise. Plenty of women have died waiting for that grand gesture of love…
