More than four years after the Enyobeni Tavern tragedy shocked the nation, the East London Regional Court has found that the tavern owners, Siyakhangela and Vuyokazi Ndevu, a bouncer, a police official and the Eastern Cape Liquor Board should all be held responsible for the deaths of 21 teenagers in Scenery Park, aged between 13 and 21, who died during a pens-down celebration in June 2022.
The court found that the owners failed to comply with liquor laws and safety regulations, while evidence presented during the inquest pointed to severe overcrowding at the tavern.
The tragedy reignited calls for stricter enforcement of liquor laws, greater accountability, and better protection for young people.
