In December, a video began circulating on social media. It features the creator walking through a branch of a South Carolina public library and recording the empty shelves throughout the young adult section. The creator notes that they hadn’t realized how bad censorship had gotten in the state–they’re from New York–in part because they avoid political news. It’s the kind of story that plays out frequently, with the same sentiment: the person hadn’t realized howbad it is.
