The Gifts We Keep Missing: Rethinking Dyslexia

As we enter Dyslexia Awareness Month, the theme "The Gifts We Keep Missing" feels more relevant than ever. This October, I am speaking at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference in San Diego about the critical role pediatricians and primary care providers play in recognizing and supporting dyslexic children. Affecting approximately 17% of the population—nearly 1 in 5 individuals—dyslexia is highly common, neurobiologically based, and highly heritable. Yet, it is frequently misunderstood and missed, especially when we only look for what is going wrong.
