As Filipino Heritage Month draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the Southeast Asian archipelago—a place that continually proves itself to be indefinable. Looking back on the release of my book, Architectural Guide Manila, two years out, I am still struck by the surprise expressed by non-Filipino readers at the discovery of a curvaceous Brutalist church in tropical green or a hulking, Corinthian-columned museum from the American colonial era. Despite the odds, the Philippines design scene is thriving, with key practitioners transcending categories and transmitting cultural traditions both at home and abroad.
