Singer Simphiwe Dana is celebrating a special milestone as her daughter, Zazi, turns 23. The award-winning musician marked the occasion by sharing heartwarming photos of Zazi, from her childhood to the confident young woman she has become today.
In a touching birthday tribute, Simphiwe reflected on the day Zazi was born and the special bond they have always shared.
“She was born with more than a full head of hair. What we call in Xhosa isihluthu (a baby born with a very full head of hair). She entered the world with a soft sigh. Immediately rolled into foetus mode and started self soothing. She was born at 23:43 on this day. She has been a self soother ever since. But the things that soothe her most are other human beings. I was 23 when I gave birth to my Zazi, in 2003. She’s now 23. Also I’m born on the 23rd. My people who follow the stars will understand this.”
The singer also spoke about the strong connection she shares with her daughter, saying they enjoy deep conversations because they are both curious and love asking questions.
“Zazi and I’s discussions are fire because she questions everything just like me. I woke up and my little Zazi Wazi is an adult whose decisions and arguments I see.”
She ended her heartfelt message with a blessing in Xhosa, encouraging her daughter to always trust in God, honour her ancestors, carry herself with dignity, remember who she is, protect herself, and know that everything will happen at the right time.
“My beautiful child, everything will happen the way it is meant to happen. Just trust God, who created your ancestors. Carry yourself with dignity. Remember who you are. Stay true to yourself. Protect yourself. I am so proud of you. #23/23/23.”
In another post, Simphiwe reflected on how life has come full circle.
“She’s at the age I gave birth to her. I was 23. She’s now 23. She inspired my first album, Zandisile in a most profound way. I’m her cheerleader now. And with her spirit I wouldn’t be surprised if she creates a shelter for those she deems are in need. And gets into foundations that help her people.”
She ended the post with the Xhosa phrase, “Ndizele bethunana,” which can be understood as an affectionate expression of gratitude and pride for her beloved child.
The birthday messages gave fans a rare glimpse into the close relationship between mother and daughter, with many joining Simphiwe in celebrating Zazi’s 23rd birthday and wishing her all the best for the future.
