I remember my psychotherapy training interview well, even though it was over two decades ago. The course director asked me to tell her about my relationship with my mother, and I said it was: “Fine. Ordinary. Nothing to see here.” There was plenty to see, it had just lay dormant, veiled as my version of “normal” because it was the only relationship with a mother I’d known. Memories about that relationship became the unintentional main events of years of personal therapy that followed.
