Astronomical fall begins on Tuesday, Sept. 22, but for much of the south-central United States, September has felt like midsummer. A persistent heat dome made the first half of the month the hottest on record for dozens of cities, including Austin, Dallas, Oklahoma City, Memphis, Nashville and Louisville, with many running 6 to 12 degrees above normal, according to a Weather.com analysis of long-term station records through Sept. 16.
