South African media personality and radio host Somizi Mhlongo has taken a heartfelt trip down memory lane, remembering his close friend, the late singer and dancer Lebo Mathosa, who was widely known as the “Queen of Kwaito”.

Somizi recently shared a throwback picture on social media showing himself standing alongside Lebo Mathosa at an awards ceremony. The image brought back memories of a major milestone in his career and a special moment he shared with the legendary performer.

Reflecting on the picture, Somizi wrote: “Wow I bumped into this pic on TikTok. This was 2005/6 when I won best choreography in a music video for awudede by Lebo Mathosa at the Chanel O awards.

Naaaah l’ve really earned my stripes. And little did we know that in less than a year from this day my bestie would depart.”

The moment Somizi referred to was at the Channel O Spirit of Africa Music Video Awards, where he won the Best Choreography award for his work on the hit music video Awu Dede by Lebo Mathosa. The award highlighted his talent as a choreographer and his contribution to one of the singer’s most memorable music videos.

Sadly, the joyful memory is also a reminder of a devastating loss. Lebo Mathosa passed away on 23 October 2006 at the age of 29 following a car accident on the N3 highway in Germiston, east of Johannesburg. She was a passenger in a Toyota Prado when the vehicle lost control and overturned. She died at the scene.

Although many years have passed since her death, Lebo’s influence on South African music and entertainment remains strong. Her legacy continues to inspire both established and emerging artists.

Earlier this year, Somizi paid tribute to the late star in another meaningful way. For the Metro FM Awards in April 2026, he designed a dress for singer Liyema Pantsi that was inspired by Lebo Mathosa.

Liyema made a striking debut at the awards in the custom creation and explained why she chose to honour the late icon.

“My first #MetroAwards. This year’s theme is ‘Icon-Inspired Music Excellence’ celebrating the legends who shaped us, while making space for the next generation to rise. And for me, there was only one choice… Lebo Mathosa.”

She continued by honouring the late star’s legacy, describing her as fearless, bold and unapologetic. Liyema added that the moment was about stepping into that same energy despite any nerves or pressure. She also thanked Somizi for creating a design that made her feel powerful and confident throughout the evening.

Through his recent tribute and creative work, Somizi continues to celebrate the life and legacy of Lebo Mathosa, ensuring that her impact on South African entertainment is never forgotten.
