Sanlam Private Equity Takes Majority Stake in Medhold. Sanlam Private Equity has acquired a majority stake in Medhold, marking a new phase of ownership for the healthcare equipment distributor.
The transaction follows a period of partnership between Medhold and Old Mutual Private Equity, which supported the company’s expansion and operational development. During that time, Medhold strengthened its position as a distributor of medical devices and hospital equipment within the Southern African healthcare market.
Medhold supplies a range of products used in clinical and surgical environments, including orthopaedic, diagnostic, theatre and intensive care equipment, as well as robotic assisted surgical systems. The company also provides installation, clinical training and after sales support to healthcare providers adopting advanced technologies.
According to Paul Moeketsi, private equity investors are positioned to support businesses that generate long term economic value. He said the investment aligns with the firm’s approach of backing companies that contribute to broader social and economic development.
With the new ownership structure in place, Medhold intends to expand its product range and extend its reach to additional healthcare facilities. The company also plans to continue operational development, workforce training and socially focused initiatives, including learnerships and donations to public healthcare institutions.
Brandon Subrayan said investments of this nature can support the growth and formalisation of mid market companies in South Africa. He noted that scaling such businesses can strengthen governance, supply chains and employment structures while supporting innovation across key sectors.
The acquisition positions Sanlam Private Equity as the majority shareholder as Medhold enters its next stage of development, with both organisations indicating a continued focus on expanding healthcare technology access and strengthening operational capabilities across the region.
