Introduction
Education is universally recognized as a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of sustainable development.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 26) and UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG-4) affirm that everyone has the right to inclusive, equitable, and quality education.
Yet, across much of the Global South, education systems remain in deep crisis.
Millions of children and youth are either out of school or receiving an education so poor in quality that it fails to transform lives or societies.
This education crisis is not merely a sectoral problem, it is a development, justice, and governance crisis with long-term global implications.
Understanding the Education Crisis
The education crisis in developing countries manifests in several interlinked ways:
- High numbers of out-of-school children;
- Poor learning outcomes despite school enrollment;
- Severe inequality in access and quality;
- Weak education governance and financing;
- Limited relevance of education to labor markets.
