There is a pattern to weekday evenings during the citrus harvesting season in the Eastern Cape’s Sundays River Valley (SRV) Municipality. Scores of workers – pickers and packers – stream from the farms that make up much of the area, piling into buses that ride bumper to bumper along the roads between the surrounding settlements. The evening sun cuts through the haze of dust kicked up on the street corners where people are dropped off to make the final trudge home.
