Hugo Broos says Bafana could “go back five years” if Pitso Mosimane becomes coach and outside influence returns.

Mosimane has not signed his Safa contract yet, with image rights and other commitments reportedly holding up the deal.

Former Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has warned that appointing Pitso Mosimane could bring back problems he worked to remove from the national team.

Broos left Bafana after the Fifa World Cup in July.

Safa’s National Executive Committee has agreed to appoint Mosimane as his replacement, but the coach has still not signed a contract.

According to Sunday World, Safa and Mosimane have agreed on money in principle.

However, talks over his image rights, podcast and involvement in his school’s football project are delaying the deal.

Speaking to Belgian publication Nieuwsblad, Broos said South Africa could “go back five years in time” under Mosimane.

He claimed club owners and agents previously tried to influence national team selections.

“I kicked them all out,” Broos said. “If one called, I said bluntly: ‘I don’t talk with agents.’”

Broos also spoke warmly about his time in South Africa.

He said the love he received from supporters after Bafana finished third at Afcon and reached the World Cup knockout stages was unlike anything he had experienced before.

Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has meanwhile entered the debate over Mosimane’s delayed contract.

McKenzie said Mosimane should receive at least the same salary Broos was paid.

“Pitso Mosimane is not a coach of the ABC Motsepe League,” McKenzie said. “He should be paid.”

McKenzie argued that Mosimane’s record at clubs including Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly meant Safa should recognise his value.

For now, Mosimane remains the expected next Bafana coach, but without a signed contract.
