A light aircraft crashed in Austin View, Midrand, north of Johannesburg, on Monday morning, leaving two people critically injured. The Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC) confirmed that the victims were taken to a medical facility for treatment.
The light aircraft, a Piper Cherokee 140 (registration ZS-XPR), lost contact with Air Traffic Control before crashing, prompting the ARCC to activate its emergency response network. The centre’s Chief of Operations, Gregory Critchley, stated that the response team included members from Grand Central Airport Rescue Firefighting, Netcare 911 rescue, South African Police Services, and other emergency services.
The aircraft was carrying a flight instructor and a student pilot, both of whom sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital. The aircraft was substantially damaged in the crash.
The ARCC’s early warning network was triggered, mobilizing various rescue teams to the scene. These teams included Netcare 911 Helicopter Emergency Medical Service, rocket hems, Gauteng traffic police helicopter, Bidvest Protea coin helicopter, Sarza, and fidelity fire services.
City of Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson William Ntladi said two fire engines and 11 firefighters responded to the crash. The emergency services were quickly deployed to the scene, and the injured individuals were rushed to hospital.
The cause of the crash is currently unknown, and an investigation is underway. The Accidents and Incidents Investigations Division (AIID) is conducting an on-site investigation and will issue a preliminary report in 30 days. The ARCC is working with relevant authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
This incident comes amid concerns about aviation safety in South Africa, following recent helicopter and plane crashes. In a separate incident, a helicopter crashed in Alberton, east of Johannesburg, with the flight instructor escaping with minor injuries.
The Civil Aviation Authority is investigating the crash, and authorities are urging motorists to avoid the Glen Austin area to make way for safety and emergency crews.
