Orlando Pirates’ Chaine has been one of the club’s standout performers this season and recently matched Ronwen Williams’ PSL clean-sheet record after another strong display against Stellenbosch FC.

The Bloemfontein-born goalkeeper now sits on 18 clean sheets in the league this season and still has three matches left to potentially break the record completely.

His Moroccan coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says the former Siwelele FC and Chippa United goalie deserves recognition for the consistency he has shown throughout the campaign.

“I’m happy for him that he broke the record, and we still have some games left,” Ouaddou told the media.

“Chaine is an important player for us. I hope definitely that Hugo Broos, the coach of the national team, will see his performance. And I really, really hope that he will be part of the national team in the US. He deserves it and he’s working hard for that.”

Chaine has surprisingly remained outside the national setup recently despite his impressive performances for Orlando Pirates.

He was overlooked for the recent friendly matches against Panama played in Durban and Cape Town, where Ronwen Williams remained first choice.

Ricardo Goss and Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner were selected as backup options during those fixtures instead.

GOALKEEPER COMPETITION HEATING UP

Leaner was handed an opportunity during the second match against Panama after replacing Williams at halftime, but endured a difficult outing as Bafana lost 2-1.

The Cape Town Spurs product struggled badly since then, including a difficult performance for Sekhukhune United against Stellenbosch FC where he was substituted before the match ended.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has also started attracting attention following several impressive performances since returning from injury.

His displays in recent high-pressure matches, including the Soweto derby, and against Mamelodi Sundowns have increased calls for him to be considered by Hugo Broos.

Still, Chaine’s consistency this season continues to make a strong case impossible to ignore.

The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper has already broken Moeneeb Josephs’ long-standing club record for clean sheets and could now finish the season with an even bigger piece of PSL history.

With the FIFA World Cup approaching, the battle for places in the Bafana squad is becoming more intense, but many now believe Chaine has earned his chance.
