The Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture is strengthening efforts to prevent rabies through animal vaccination and community awareness, following its annual World Rabies Day event at Mkanzi Village in Ngcobo. More than 200,000 animals have been vaccinated across the province since the beginning of the year as part of ongoing efforts to control the disease and protect people and animals. The event focused on the importance of rabies prevention, responsible animal ownership and cooperation between farmers, veterinary officials and rural communities. The Chris Hani District was identified as a rabies hotspot, prompting the Department to host the awareness event in the area. With at least nine people having died from rabies in the Amathole, OR Tambo, Alfred Nzo and Chris Hani district municipalities, the campaign highlights the urgent need for continued vaccination and early reporting of suspected cases.
