Running a creche that serves 75 children on the rural side of Botha’s Hill is no small feat, but Zanele Zondi shows up every day to do a most commendable job. Now, she’s about to get the support that will upgrade her school and make many little people truly happy!
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (06 February 2026) – In the heart of KwaSondela, in the Qadi district of the rural side of Botha’s Hill, Khulakahle Crèche and Pre-School stands as a beacon of hope for the community’s children and a lifeline for mothers and grandmothers who juggle the demands of running households, working, and raising children on their own.
Founded by 54-year-old Zanele Zondi, the crèche currently serves 75 children registered from babies to five years old. With no external funding, apart from the stipend paid to her five teachers from the Education Department, Zanele does her best to keep her school spotlessly clean with the handful of young volunteers from the community who help at the creche. Most of the monthly payments for school fees, from parents who can afford the fees, go towards providing breakfast and lunch for the children.
It’s a demanding job, yet Zanele works wonders with her limited resources. Now, she’s set to receive support that will take her passion project to greater heights and bring joy to many little faces!
Hearts in Hands to Revitalise Khulakahle Crèche
Selected as Hearts in Hands Food Bank’s 2026 Focus Project, Khulakahle Creche and Pre-School will undergo much-needed refurbishment and upliftment of the facilities where Zanele lovingly educates and cares for learners every day.
Project Manager, Kim Griffith Jones, shared the vision to assist the school.
“Whilst the two buildings for classrooms and the ‘hall’ are structurally sound, they are in dire need of a internal and external uplift.”
In chatting to Zanele on a visit to the site, Kim and Hearts in Hands Founder, Tracy, have highlighted and done a breakdown of some visuals and areas they would like to improve.
These include painting the classrooms, doing electrical repairs, tackling the issue of dampness caused by flood damage, installing chalkboards and educational charts, providing a jojo tank solution, fixing up the kitchen, visual refurbishments of the exterior and upgrades to the play area.
The organisation is currently raising funds to kick off its stage-by-stage uplift for Zanele and the children.
Creating safe and inspiring learning environments matters for a child’s early years. Last year, Hearts in Hands Food Bank NPO did a stunning upgrade of Lusana Crèche in KwaNgcolosi. Now it is inviting corporates, businesses and individuals to partner with them on this meaningful journey.
“Our hearts and our hands are committed to making a difference at Khulakahle Crèche and Preschool. We’d be so grateful for your support in giving this wonderful space a fresh breath of life in our 2026 focus project,” Kim and Tracy appeal.
