Costa Rica – Morning One

We woke up to Costa Rica slowly stretching into the day.

No alarms. No rushing. Just light creeping through the windows and the city still half-asleep below us. It’s Sunday, so the pace feels gentler – like the country itself is giving us permission to breathe.

Breakfast was simple but grounding. Rice and black beans, scrambled eggs, sweet plantain, and what I initially thought was beetroot but turned out to be more like a frankfurter-style sausage. Not mad about it. Proper fuel. The kind of food that settles you rather than overwhelms you. Eaten with a view that still doesn’t quite feel real yet.

The city sits beneath us in layers – thousands of tiny golden lights fading as morning takes hold, mountains wrapped in thick cloud like they’re being tucked in again. The clouds don’t rush here. They roll, hover, and gather. We’re expecting a thunderstorm this afternoon, and honestly, it feels right. Like part of the welcome.

We haven’t ventured out yet. Today is a soft-launch kind of day. Food shopping. Drinks. Getting our bearings. Letting our bodies catch up with where we are. No pressure to do Costa Rica yet – just to be here.

Already, there’s been our first wildlife initiation. Ants. A full-blown ant city, queen and all. I accidentally stood in their entire civilisation and got promptly reminded whose land this is. A sharp sting, a quick lesson, and mutual respect restored. Consider it the official welcome ceremony.

Right now, everything feels calm and slightly unreal. The pool glows blue against the grey sky. The clouds hang low and dramatic. The city hums quietly in the distance. There’s no urgency, no schedule, no expectations.

Just the first morning.

Just the beginning.
