Let’s stop pretending.
I went into community work believing the same story everyone else believes. That some communities are “disadvantaged” because they lack access. Fewer services. Less support. Structural barriers so strong that personal responsibility barely matters.
It sounds compassionate.
It sounds progressive.
It’s also largely bullshit.
I didn’t learn that from Twitter. I learned it by working there.
This Community Wasn’t Lacking Support. It Was Drowning in It.
On paper, this was a high-priority community.
And in reality? They had more access than most working people I know.
Priority healthcare.
Priority mental health services.
Education pathways.
Free courses.
Outreach workers.
Advocates.
Grants.
Exemptions.
Endless support structures.
This wasn’t neglect.
This was saturation.
