Among the most revealing details in the recent Anthropic episode was how ordinary the dependency felt. On June 12, 2026, Anthropic announced that the U.S. government had issued an export-control directive requiring the company to suspend access to its advanced models, Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5, for foreign nationals, including foreign national employees. Since the company could not reliably separate eligible from ineligible users in real time, it disabled the models for all customers.
