Over the past two decades, cases have been built to optimize airflow around a graphics card placed in the main PCIe slot of a motherboard. However, that does not necessarily imply this is the best place for a GPU to sit for maximum cooling potential. YouTuber TrashBench conducted an experiment, putting a graphics card in various positions in a case with a side-intake, and found that putting the graphics card directly next to the side-intake provided significantly better thermals, resulting in a 17-degree temperature drop on an RTX 3080 graphics card.
