She had used up the life insurance, stretched her credit cards, and still couldn’t make the numbers behave.

She sat on the edge of the bed in yesterday’s clothes.

The phone was face-down on the nightstand.

The lights were off.

Her shoes were still by the door.

It was a little after two in the morning.

Her mind wouldn’t stop.

Not racing. Not panicking.

Just working. Grinding. Replaying. Predicting.

Trying to build a future out of pieces that didn’t want to line up.

Most people think breaking down is dramatic.

It usually isn’t.

It’s quiet. Like going down a slide.

It’s staring at the wall while your thoughts stack up faster than you can sort them.

Earlier that day someone said, “You’re strong. You’ll figure it out.”

Another said, “You always land on your feet.”

Someone else added, “You’re so resourceful.”

They meant well.
