Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs could be heading for a title battle this season, with many fans hoping the two Soweto giants can go head-to-head for the Betway Premiership crown.

Pirates enter the campaign with plenty of confidence after a remarkable 2025/26 season.

The Buccaneers claimed the league title and added more silverware to their trophy cabinet, once again underlining their reputation as one of South African football’s strongest cup sides.

Chiefs, meanwhile, are desperate to close the gap on their rivals. Amakhosi have endured a difficult period in recent years, with their last league title coming in 2015. However, there is renewed optimism at Naturena following a busy transfer window and the arrival of new coach Fernando Da Cruz.

The Glamour Boys have strengthened their squad and already appear to have more attacking threat and creativity in midfield. That has raised expectations that Chiefs could challenge for major honours this season.

Orlando Pirates will host Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, 31 October 2026. The fixture is scheduled for FNB Stadium, with the match also listed by stadium management for a 15:30 kick-off.

The second league meeting is scheduled for 13 March 2027, with Chiefs as the home side.

The derby will carry plenty of intrigue given the teams’ recent meetings. Their most recent league clash ended in a 1-1 draw on 26 April 2026, while Pirates had previously beaten Chiefs 3-0 in the league.

If both clubs maintain their early-season form, the October clash could be more than just another Soweto Derby. It could prove to be an early test of which side has the credentials to challenge for the Betway Premiership title.
