Kaizer Chiefs are preparing to secure one of their standout performers, Glody Makabi Lilepo, with a contract extension as he approaches the completion of his first full season at the club. The Congolese forward has quickly become an important figure at Naturena since arriving in South Africa, delivering consistent performances that have strengthened the team’s attacking options. His impact has not gone unnoticed by both supporters and rival clubs, which has placed him firmly in the spotlight. Chiefs view him as part of their long term project as they continue rebuilding and pushing for stronger domestic dominance. The timing of a potential extension reflects the club’s intent to protect key assets before external interest intensifies further.
Lilepo joined Kaizer Chiefs from French third division side Valenciennes in January last year, and his initial financial package reflected a modest entry into the squad. For the first six months, his earnings were relatively lower as he adjusted to a new environment and league demands. His situation changed significantly after a strong second half of the previous season, where he scored six important goals that boosted his standing within the team. That performance triggered an improvement in his contract terms as his two year deal was fully activated under better financial conditions. He is currently tied to the club until June 2027, with a package that already surpasses what he previously earned in France.
Since settling at Naturena, Lilepo has delivered steady output with eight goals and three assists in his first full campaign, making him one of the club’s most productive attacking players. His earnings, reportedly in the six figure range, have contributed to his satisfaction and stability in Johannesburg. Kaizer Chiefs have also supported him with additional benefits, including an accommodation allowance that runs into the tens of thousands of rand each month. This has enabled him to live comfortably in an upmarket area in Johannesburg South, adding to his sense of security off the field. His personal life has also stabilised, as he has since brought his wife and two children from France to live with him in South Africa, strengthening his off field happiness and focus.
Talks around a contract extension are now gaining momentum as Lilepo enters a key phase of his career at the club, with his current deal still having just over a year remaining at the end of next month. Despite his importance to Kaizer Chiefs, there has been growing attention from abroad, including initial contact from Libyan club Al Ittihad through a France based agent. These discussions remain at a preliminary stage and have not developed into formal negotiations. Lilepo is understood to be content in Johannesburg and is not eager to relocate to Tripoli, especially after his previous experience with Sudanese club Al Hilal. For any transfer to materialise, Kaizer Chiefs would need to receive an extremely high fee, and the club is currently not open to selling him as they prioritise squad stability and continuity.
Beyond club football, Lilepo’s international situation remains complicated despite DR Congo qualifying for the World Cup. His relationship with national team coach Sebastien Desabre is still unresolved, which has affected his recent involvement with the national side. He has not featured for DR Congo since June 2023, leaving a gap in his international career during a crucial development period. Even so, his focus remains on club football where he continues to play a key role for Kaizer Chiefs. With strong performances, financial satisfaction, and stability in his personal life, the most likely outcome is an improved contract extension that keeps him at Naturena for the foreseeable future while the club builds around his attacking influence.
