DJ Fresh Reveals Why He Chose to Join Kaya 959

Popular broadcaster DJ Fresh has opened up about the reasons behind his decision to join Kaya 959 as the station’s new weekday breakfast show host.
The radio veteran will officially take over the breakfast slot from Wednesday, 1 July 2026, following the exit of Sizwe Dhlomo. While many fans have welcomed the news, Fresh says his move to Kaya 959 was about more than just a new job opportunity.
Speaking to TshisaLIVE, DJ Fresh revealed that talks with Kaya 959 actually started early last year. However, he was not immediately convinced because he was focused on building 938, a project he believed in and dedicated himself to completely.
“The conversation with Kaya started early last year and as much as I was receptive to the idea, I was not fully sold because I was so committed to the 938 build, dream and vision of that frequency. Not only did I commit to it, but I loved it and I lived and breathed it but circumstances changed and I reached a point where I had to make a decision that was right for my family and my career.”
Fresh explained that the decision eventually came down to purpose, alignment and doing what was best for both his family and his future in broadcasting.
“I’ve always been purpose-driven, always been about my why. It feels like purpose. I’m not going to pretend there isn’t a deep sense of gratitude because there is, but I think, more than anything, it feels like alignment. I wouldn’t say this is a comeback in the sense that I went away, but it’s definitely a homecoming of sorts to what I’m passionate about. A format I love. Commercial breakfast radio. This is where I feel the most alive,” he said.
According to Fresh, one of the biggest reasons he accepted Kaya 959’s offer was the certainty and direction that came with it. He said the station was clear about its vision and what it expected from him.
“What made me say yes to Kaya was the clarity it came with. They were clear about what they wanted – clear about the terms, clear about the repositioning of breakfast and the station.”
For DJ Fresh, joining Kaya 959 is not simply a career move. It is a chance to return to a radio format he loves and one that makes him feel most at home. As he prepares to take over the breakfast show, listeners can look forward to hearing one of South Africa’s most experienced broadcasters back behind the microphone during one of radio’s biggest time slots.
