South African musician Danny K has spoken publicly for the first time about the death of his wife, Lisa Koppel, who passed away at the age of 41 following a private battle with colorectal cancer.
The singer shared a series of deeply personal photographs on social media, including treasured moments with Lisa and pictures from their wedding day. Alongside the images, Danny opened up about the devastating journey his family had faced since Lisa was diagnosed in November 2023.
“Lisa was diagnosed with colon cancer in November 2023. From that moment, she fought with extraordinary strength and determination,” he wrote.
Danny explained that he and their family searched for hope both in South Africa and abroad, pursuing every available treatment and opportunity. Despite their efforts, Lisa’s condition ultimately proved too difficult to overcome.
He also revealed why Lisa had chosen to keep her illness private. She did not want pity, attention or sympathy, instead wanting to protect their three children and allow them to hold on to their happiness and innocence for as long as possible.
“Even through the hardest moments, she remained gentle, humble and remarkably brave, inspiring everyone who walked this journey beside her,” Danny wrote.
The family also expressed gratitude to the doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals who cared for Lisa throughout her illness, both locally and internationally.
Now, Danny is using his wife’s story to shine a light on colorectal cancer, particularly as the disease increasingly affects younger people. He noted that Lisa had hoped to eventually use her own experience to raise awareness and encourage early detection, but sadly, she never got the chance.
“We are sharing Lisa’s diagnosis now for one important reason: awareness,” he wrote.
Danny highlighted that international guidelines now recommend routine screening from age 45 for people at average risk, while persistent symptoms should be discussed with a doctor and properly investigated.
“Our family will now carry that purpose forward in her name,” he said.
The loss has left the Koppel and Gundelfinger families devastated. Danny described Lisa as the wife he worshipped, while their three children have lost what he called an extraordinary mother.
“The Koppel and Gundelfinger families have been left shattered. I have lost the wife I worshipped, our three children have lost an extraordinary mother, and her family and friends have lost someone they deeply loved.”
As the family mourns, Danny has asked for prayers, compassion and privacy.
Most importantly, he wants Lisa to be remembered for far more than the illness that took her life.
“Lisa’s illness will never define her. She will be remembered for the way she lived and loved: with kindness, humility, courage and an unwavering devotion to the people who meant everything to her.”
