Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news.

Durban: KwaZulu-Natal Traditional Affairs Minister Rev. Thulasizwe Buthelezi has called for the erection of a national monument to honour the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, Prime Minister to the Zulu Nation and founder and President Emeritus of the Inkatha Freedom Party. Minister Buthelezi made the call at the 2026 KwaZulu-Natal Municipal Excellence Awards, held at the Durban International Convention Centre on Thursday night. The Minister said a complete and truthful reflection of South Africa’s liberation history must recognise Prince Buthelezi’s contribution alongside other national icons. His remarks follow the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality’s recent installation of statues of former Presidents Nelson Mandela and Oliver Reginald Tambo at the Moses Mabhida Stadium precinct. “Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi was the bridge between the ANC Mission in Exile of Mr Oliver Tambo and the new democratic dispensation of President Nelson Mandela. Prince Buthelezi kept the struggle alive in South Africa. When the apartheid regime had silenced both Tambo and Mandela, Buthelezi was the voice of the oppressed. The two statues in eThekwini are therefore incomplete without the statue of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi,” said Buthelezi.

uMhlanga: The uMkhonto weSizwe Party has broken the political record in history since the dawn of democracy as the only political party who has fired six Secretary Generals in a space of two years. This comes after the party leadership announced the removal of their SG Dr Bongani Mncwabe and replaced him with the MK Party member of Parliament Advocate Sibonelo Nomvalo. The changes were announced last night Thursday at a media briefing held at uMhlanga, north of Durban. Nomvalo is the seventh SG to be appointed by the MK Party since it was officially announced on 16 December 2023. The first SG of the party was Thanduxolo Gorbachev Dyodo soon after it was announced in December 2023. The party also announced the removal of former DA eMfuleni Mayor Bongani Baloyi as the head of Elections. Baloyi was replaced by Tholakele Dlamini.

uMhlathuze: The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal is set to announce their mayoral candidate of uMhlathuze Local Municipality that was once a stronghold of the ANC. The party is in a campaign to strengthen their local government campaign in KZN to secure another municipality after they won their first uMngeni Local Municipality in Howick during the 2021 local government elections. The DA says the announcement will be made at the start of a DA Provincial Council meeting, the DA KwaZulu-Natal’s broadest and highest decision-making body. The announcement of the mayoral candidate will be made by Francois Rodgers, DA KZN Leader, and Dean Macpherson, DA KZN Chairperson on Saturday in Durban.
