On July 9, three days after Pokémon Go’s 10th anniversary, thousands of players gathered in New York City’s Times Square for a celebratory event that ended with people working together to catch an event-exclusive Mewtwo. For those there, it was a magical realization of the promise Pokémon Go has always claimed to hold. The AR monster-collecting app has been a fixture in communities both online and off, and having a massive crowd work together to capture one of the most iconic monsters in the series’ history is one hell of a way to ring in the big one-oh. But underneath the cheers of the crowd, a pesky, uncomfortable ringing can be heard.
