Tyler Perry grew up poor in New Orleans, the child of a father who was routinely violent and a household defined by instability and scarcity. He was homeless in his early twenties, sleeping in his car on some nights while trying to make his first stage show work. That show eventually became the foundation of a multi-billion dollar entertainment empire. The fortune he built has been considerable.
