Actress and TV producer Connie Ferguson has shared the beautiful story of how she met her late husband, Shona Ferguson, and opened up about the pain of losing him.
Connie recently appeared on 947 with Thando, where she spoke to actress and radio host Thando Thabethe about the special moment that changed her life forever.
Connie revealed that she met Shona in July 2001, and surprisingly, their first meeting happened at her own home.
She explained that Shona was not visiting her. Instead, he was dropping off people he knew at her house.
“Funny story, he was actually dropping people off at my house. He didn’t know me and I didn’t know him. He didn’t even know my sister but he knew my sister’s friends , those were the people he was dropping off at my house. I was way back in my bedroom when I just heard this male voice in my kitchen.”
Connie said she immediately wondered who the man’s voice belonged to because there were no men living in the house.
Smiling as she remembered the moment, she said, “I love this story, it’s so romantic.”
She recalled walking from her bedroom down the passage, where she saw a man standing with his back turned to her while wearing a suit.
“I heard his laugh. You know that laugh that makes you laugh and you don’t know what people are laughing about? It’s that laugh.”
Connie said Shona then turned around and greeted her.
“He turns around with a bright smile. Sho had the brightest smile and then he goes, ‘Hi, I’m Shona.’”
She introduced herself and admitted she was surprised when Shona spoke fluent Setswana.
Connie said she did not expect him to speak the language so well. The following day, they all went out for dinner as a group.
Things moved very quickly after that.
She revealed that by October 2001, Shona had already paid lobola.
The couple went on to build a life together, becoming one of South Africa’s most admired couples. They welcomed their daughter, Alicia Ferguson, while Connie’s eldest daughter, Lesedi Ferguson, also became part of their close family.
Together, they founded Ferguson Films, the production company behind successful TV dramas and telenovelas such as Rockville, The Queen, and Kings of Jo’Burg.
Connie also spoke honestly about the heartbreaking loss of her husband in 2021.
“It was very unexpected, it was something that someone my age would never consider would happen to them. It wasn’t just losing my husband for me, it was losing my best friend, it was losing my partner.”
She explained that their lives were completely connected.
“People talk about he had his life and I had my own life and then we come together, no, our lives were intertwined completely. For me it was a jerking new reality, I didn’t know how to process it, for the longest time I didn’t know how to process it.”
Connie said even simple daily routines became painful after Shona’s passing. They used to make the bed together every morning, and she struggled to get used to doing it alone. Even making breakfast reminded her that he was no longer there.
Although several years have passed, Connie said she still speaks about him with the same love.
“It’s been five years this year, even now, five years later I talk about him like it was yesterday. I love talking about him.”
Her heartfelt memories showed just how deep their love was and why Shona Ferguson continues to hold a special place in her heart.
