For years, the Tswelelopele Early Childhood Development Centre has served the community of Motlhabe Village and its bright young people. The cracks in the walls and the deteriorating facilities reflected the building’s age – until a collaboration of organisations, moved by its impact, stepped in to provide a complete infrastructure transformation.
Motlhabe, South Africa (16 February 2026) – Since the 1960s, the Tswelelopele Early Childhood Development Centre has been the cornerstone of Motlhabe Village, nurturing generations of young minds. Though it remained a vital source of early learning for young children in the village, the physical environment had become a barrier to safe learning.
Cracked walls, unstable ceilings and broken window frames created unsafe learning conditions, while pit toilets collapsed during heavy rains, posing serious risks to children’s health and safety.
However, the school’s current owner stepped in to ensure the centre could continue operating, responding to a clear and urgent community need.
Through the collaboration of Breadline Africa, Ngangezwe Foundation, and the generosity of donors, Tswelelopele ECD Centre underwent a full infrastructure transformation!
A New Foundation for Young Minds
The ECD centre now boasts a brand-new safe and spacious classroom, a fully equipped kitchen, an administrative office, a dedicated sickbay and modern low-flush toilets that replaced the unsafe pit toilets.
These improvements have created a high-quality learning environment that supports early childhood development and ensures the health and safety of every child.
“Tswelelopele ECD Centre now meets the Department of Basic Education’s norms and standards, an achievement that is groundbreaking and sets a new benchmark for the Moses Kotane Local Municipality. We are incredibly proud of this milestone, and it is a true win for the community. Ngangezwe is honoured to have played a catalytic role, connecting partners and enabling this vision to become a reality. On behalf of the ECD centre, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this possible,” said Duduzile Makhari, Executive Director of Ngangezwe Foundation.

The impact of the redevelopment has been significant.
Thirty-nine children now learn in safe, vibrant classrooms that support curiosity and cognitive development. Educators work with renewed confidence, supported by facilities that enable effective teaching. Parents are reassured, knowing their children are cared for in a secure and nurturing environment. And the wider community benefits as the centre once again serves as a strong foundation for early education in Motlhabe Village.
