I’ve written about why people embrace misinformation, rumors, and myths, i.e., why they accept things as true without evidence or substantive support from experts. Stephen Colbert saw the rise in this phenomenon in 2005, and coined the term “truthiness.”[i] This describes a quality of things that seem like they should be true, which people just believe due to a "gut feeling."
