The ANC once said it would govern until Jesus Christ returned. DA caucus leader Thabani Mthethwa says the water crisis in eThekwini proves that time has come and gone.

Former president Jacob Zuma made the claim that the ANC would rule until the second coming of Jesus Christ. But in 2016, the party began losing metros, including Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Nelson Mandela Bay.

Mthethwa says the water mafia’s hold over eThekwini is proof the ANC can no longer govern.

“The ANC is failing to fight this crisis, which shows that their rule until the return of Jesus Christ is over,” said Mthethwa.

He says water mafia groups deliberately destroy infrastructure so the city is forced to hire their private tanks. The city bought about 100 water tankers but hired private companies through the tender system instead of using them.

Most townships in eThekwini have no water. Mthethwa says the DA wants the city to use intelligence to monitor water and electricity infrastructure and hold those destroying it accountable.

The Ministry of Water and Sanitation has referred water tanker mafia activities to the police. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is investigating corruption and illegal water sales.
