A Graduate Lost Everything to Fire – Now the UWC Fairy Godmother is Asking for a Miracle

The UWC Fairy Godmother usually helps students navigate the daily hurdles of campus life, but she has sent out an urgent call to help a graduate who has lost everything – including her hard-earned degrees.

Western Cape, South Africa (06 February 2026) – The UWC Fairy Godmother provides a compassionate lifeline for students at the University of the Western Cape who are struggling to afford basic essentials, from food and transport to bedding and academic costs.

While her mission usually focuses on the daily hurdles of university life, she recently stepped in to support a graduate who had nowhere else to turn after losing nearly everything in a harrowing fire.

The disaster left her and her two children, aged 11 months and seven years old, with only the clothes on their backs. She also shared that she had been without permanent work since graduating until recently.

“A week after the incident, I got a call that I must go and sign a work contract for SAPS at the customs house in Cape Town. Now I’m struggling with clothes to go to work,” the woman shared.

Desperate and devastated, the graduate reached out to the student support charity requesting funds for clothing and to reprint her two degrees, after her home tragically burned down.

It takes a village to overcome a tragedy, and The UWC Fairy Godmother has now issued a heartfelt appeal to help this graduate with monetary donations to cover clothing and reprinting her degrees so she can pick up the pieces, apply for the job she studied for, and secure a better life for herself and her children.

“Unfortunately, it is impractical to assist this graduate, who is not on campus, with physical clothing gifts, and so we are seeking R1,000 to get her degree certificates reprinted, or a contribution towards replacement clothing,” the fairy godmother said.
