Sekhukhune United to feel the wrath of Kaizer Chiefs’ MTN8 heartbreak?

Kaizer Chiefs will be determined to return to winning ways when they host Sekhukhune United in a Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Amakhosi suffered their first setback of the 2026/27 season last weekend when they were eliminated from the MTN8.

The disappointment has provided extra motivation for the Soweto giants, who will now turn their attention to maintaining their perfect start to the league campaign.

Kaizer Chiefs opened their Betway Premiership season with a victory away to newcomers Kruger United, while Sekhukhune United also began their league campaign with a win before suffering an MTN8 exit.

Fullback Reeve Frosler says the squad has already moved on from the disappointment and is focused on producing a positive response against Babina Noko.

“Losing the MTN8 game was not ideal but we’ve got to pick ourselves up and go onto the next one,” Frosler said.

He added that the players had discussed the areas that needed improvement and were motivated to deliver a strong performance.

“We have discussed where we need to improve and we are motivated as a team to perform at our best and take the three points.”

Thabiso Monyane believes the MTN8 defeat can serve as a valuable lesson for the team as they prepare for a demanding league encounter.

“The MTN8 loss really tested us as a group and we have used that as fuel to improve all areas of our game, to sharpen up. It has been a wake-up call for all of us,” Monyane said.

The Kaizer Chiefs defender expects a tough battle against a well-organised Sekhukhune side.

“They are a tough, hard-running team that is well organised so it will not be easy,” he added.

Despite a highly anticipated meeting with Mamelodi Sundowns awaiting Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, 15 August, Monyane insists the squad is concentrating solely on the immediate challenge.

“We know Sundowns are looming in the background but we are taking one step at a time and our full attention is focused on facing Sekhukhune.”

Kaizer Chiefs will be hoping to use home advantage to secure another three points and keep their 100% league record intact.

A victory would give Amakhosi the perfect platform heading into Saturday’s blockbuster encounter against Mamelodi Sundowns, but first they must overcome a Sekhukhune United side equally determined to recover from their own MTN8 disappointment.
