Unresolved trauma can linger in the body long after the threat of harm has passed, rising up as a reaction rather than a memory. For many survivors of trauma, the body is the home of chronic stress, and as a result, it can become a source of pain, shame, and intrusion. In my clinical practice, I have observed that individuals who have endured trauma often feel disconnected and estranged from their bodies.
