The ICC T20 World Cup is officially underway with India, Pakistan and England all kicking off their campaigns with wins.
In an entertaining opening ceremony, India’s 2024 T20 World Cup-winning captain Rohit Sharma and ICC chairman Jay Shah showcased the prized trophy to an eager Wankhede Stadium before the action kicked off for the world to witness.
India were without Jasprit Bumrah due to illness; and Mohammed Siraj made good on his late inclusion into the squad, taking three wickets to help the hosts to a 29-run win over the USA.
The men in blue initially looked in trouble at 77/6, but captain Suryakumar Yadav (84* off 49 balls) guided them to 161/9 before the bowlers ensured the runs would be enough.
Playing their game in Colombo, Pakistan were also winners in their opener — beating the Netherlands by three wickets.
On Sunday, England’s encounter with Nepal went to the final ball — with the thrilling four-run win only just preventing a major upset.
New Zealand best Afghanistan by five wickets before Sri Lanka were victorious by 20-runs over Ireland.
On Monday, the Proteas begin their tournament against Canada in Ahmedabad. Play begins at 15:30 and the game will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
